NFL Round Three: Meath v Kildare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I have a fear that that result may haunt us at the end of the league, as head to head results are what define the positions in the league, and we could well finish level on points with Kildare.

Was thinking the very same CastleBravo. That's why I feel we need to address this in the case of the two other teams likely to be in contention for promotion, namely Derry (especially) and Galway (possibly). We have to hope that Kildare drop a point somewhere else along the way. They too have games v Derry at home (next weekend) and Galway away (final match).

Great game and hard luck. The game could have went either way but we are mighty relieved to have gotten a win. As the Sunday Independent said today "it was a game stolen from summer". Good luck in the rest of the league and hopefully we will have a summer contest to equal last night's thriller.

Whats wrong with Ward that he won't take frees..? Bray missed 2 or 3 frees in very scorable territory which could have been the difference at the end of the game..

Banty's teams aren't great defensively. Lots of men behind the ball, one dedicated sweeper but it's just numbers for the sake of it. The pressure on the man in posession doesn't come quickly enough, everyone's marking space, not sure when when to step up and close down. Defensively we're a poor impression of Dublin or Donegal.

Kickouts are poor tactically, always lobbed on top of Mark Ward which makes life very easy for a team like Kildare that love to blitz midfield. I said this before that teams like Kildare and Tyrone will dominate us on breaking ball. Watched Kerry today and the ball is always kicked out to the wings where they high fielders have a little more room to catch ball.

We have no problem putting scores on the board but defensively we're not up to par. Also Banty's running game won't be nearly as effective in the open spaces of Croke Park where kicking teams like Dublin and Kerry thrive.

Well I thought we played reasonable well, and this was easilt Kildare's best performance of the year.I think a draw would have been a fair result. But yet again we where wiped out at midfield. If we had a decent midfield we would have won the game and won it well. Tom Walsh MUST start in midfield against Galway. I thought our half-back line was poor on the night ,McAnarney was found wanting .Ok going forward, but I like my defenders to defend...

You are right, the kickouts are always lobbed on top of Ward. We are too predictable with the kickouts, and to make matters worse we don't win the breaking ball half the time. We need to sort that out

Westmeath have beaten Galway. Unreal. No excuses now for the lads to go far far from home and win away.

We conceded so many scores because Kildare were allowed to attack in numbers from deep.
You have to break their momentum out the field and force them to take option B.
Instead they could take option A nearly every time.
Our midfield are not mobile enough.
Get Menton out there and stop landing skyscraper kickouts on top of Mark Ward.
There were quite a few positives last night.
Gilsenan and Tobin were excellent, but we need to start solving problems now.
Our championship midfield needs to be Shane O'Rourke and Brian Menton.
If it isn't, we're going to be back here in the summer saying the same things we've been saying for the last 3 years.
And for those who think having John McDermott would make a difference, it wouldn't.
The game has changed.

I agree with you the kick-outs are just lobbed up to Mark Ward and the opponents just wait for him to break it to them!

Seamusmac I believe if Kildare took their chances in the first half, think we missed about four goal chances the scoreline at halftime would been a hard one to look at for meath. A good tight game and Im happy we should determination and hunger to win even after the second goal went in. Hopefully (IF) we are to meet in Leinster again it will be as exciting and a good contest like last night hopefully with the same result for kildare as I believe it was our hunger that grinded out the win last night and fingers crossed that is what will get us over the line into that leinster final.

You took the words out of my mouth!
''We need to start Menton and O'Rourke at midfield''

Meade isn't up to scratch and M.Ward gives the ball away a lot

Also, would it kill us to take the odd short kick-out here and there?
Just to mix things up.
If I said to the 8 year old beside me, "Where's our next kick-out going?", he would have replied, "Right down on top of Mark Ward and the 4 Kildare players surrounding him."
And he would have been right.
