St. Martins complete double

June 24, 2006
Coiste Na Mi - Peile na nOg Fe 14 U/14 Division 1 Championship Final Naomh Máirtín 2-14 Na Fianna 2-4 St Martins completed the double when winning their second under 14 title in a week and their fourth in three years when adding the under 14 division one championship to the league title won last weekend when getting the better of Na Fianna in Pairc Tailteann on Wednesday evening 21st June. Na Fianna got the perfect start with Sean O'Neill goaling in the first minute.  It took St Martins a while to recover but points from Joe O'Brien, Michael McCarthy, Keith Doherty and Ian Donoghue between the fourth and seventh minutes saw them edge in front. Just as things seemed to be going well for the Drumree/Dunshaughlin outfit O'Neill struck for another goal in the ninth minute.  This time St Martins replied with two quick points from McCarthy and Conor Devereux.  The score of the game came on the quarter hour mark when Devereux fielded a high ball in his own half before running the length of the pitch and unleashing a fierce shot which was brilliantly saved by Ciaran Brennan in the Na Fianna goals. However the ball rebounded to Devereux who made no mistake second time around.  The remainder of the half was evenly matched with points from O'Brien, Devereux and Donoghue for St Martins and two for Na Fianna leaving St. Martins leading 1-10 to 2-2 at the break.  The five point lead seemed precarious enough given the fact that they had played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half. Scores were harder to come by in the second half with the St Martins full back line of Keith Doherty, Alastar Doyle and Niall Hannon started to get the upper hand on their opponents. A free from McCarthy and a David Baggot point edged St Martins a little further in front before a long ball was gathered by Niall Clusker who set up Alan O'Brien for his side s second goal on eighteen minutes.  This more or less killed off the game with McCarthy and Gavin Byrne swapping points with Na Fianna in the remaining twelve minutes.  Special praise must go to the St Martins defence who held their opponents with the aid of the wind to two points in the second half to leave St Martins winners on a 2-14 to 2-4 score line. Best for St Martins were Conor Devereux, Keith Doherty, Ian Donoghue and Niall Hannon while Keith Jordan, Sean O'Neill and Killian Coffey were best for Na Fianna who look to have a bright future as this was their first year in division one having won promotion last year. St Martins now go on to represent Meath in the All Ireland Féile Peil na nÓg competition to be held in Wicklow starting on the 30th of June.
