IHC: Kelly the Kildalkey hero

Kildalkey's Aaron Byas

Kildalkey 3-11 Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-12

Kildalkey travelled to Paddy O'Brien Park Navan on Sunday morning knowing only a win would be good enough to advance to the quarter finals of the IHC  and even at that needed other results to go their way.

The Village kept their side of the bargain and won the game and thankfully the other results went their way.

Kildalkey started brightly and got off to a great start with points from Ross Flynn, Brian Coneely and Arron Byas. Minutes later a great run by captain Dan Fagan set up veteran Nigel Dunphy who hit a ferocious shot past the Donaghmore keeper to leave the blues leading by 1-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

Brian Coneely notched his second point as did Arron Byas while Enda Keogh and 3 more from Flynn closed the Kildalkey scoring. The Moores found the net just before the break as Kildalkey went  in leading by four points, 1-9 to 1-5.

Donaghmore started the second half all guns blazing and hit the first 4 points to tie up the match at 1-9 each

Then out of nothing Eoin Kelly got a block down in the Donaghmore square and the ball ended up in the net. Ross Flynn hit a point and the score was 2-10 to 1-10.

Donaghmore hit back with 2 points to leave a very nervous last few minutes but the lively Arron Byas stepped up to hit a great point to leave 2 in it and time almost up. Eoin Kelly made sure of the win when he was on hand to rifle the ball into the net to seal a five point win.

The backs for Kildalkey were heroic throughout with the full back line of Sean Kirke, Daire Lehart and Cathal O'Sullivan not giving an inch.

Ross Flynn kept the score board ticking over while Arron Byas and Brian Coneely tormented the Donaghmore backs with their speed and scored 5 points between them while Eoin Kelly finished up the hero of the day with his 2 opportunist second half goals.
