JFC B: Improving Kilbride qualify with a game to spare

August 15, 2017

Slane's Eamon Feeley with Finbar Clarke Kilbride during the Meath JFC B game at Dunsany

Kilbride 1-12 Slane 0-11

In recent years Kilbride would not be familar with going into round five of the championship having already qualified for a quarter final with a game to spare.

2017 is some what different and a real statment of intent was laid down on Sunday afternoon in Dunsany when Kilbride took on Slane to see who would claim top spot in group A.

Both teams have high hopes for honours this year so it was important to keep the momentium going ahead of the quarter finals. Dunsanys pitch was in excellent condition and Eamon Barry got us going shortly after 4:30pm with a large crowd in attendance

It was Kilbride who created the first scoring chance but it yielded there first wide.  Slane would then dominate for the next ten minutes but even with this superiority Kilbride were still creating the odd chance and could have been level after 10 minutes if they took there chances but it was Slane who led by three points to no score.

As Kilbride settled there first score came on twelve minutes from Joseph Donnelly and it was a peach from distance. It was this score that started the dominance and on fiftheen minutes Kilbride were ahead after reeling off four scores from Mikey Farrell on thirteen Stephen McMullen on fourteen and the pick of them all from Joseph Donnelly off the outside of his left from fifty yards. This was real quality from Kilbride. At this point they were solid in defence and worked hard all over the field putting pressure and turning over posession. Wing forwards Callum McGovern and Cathal McKeon were having a real impact on the flanks and they chased everything. Midfield was on top and the half back line of Finbar Clarke, Dean Stapelton and Craig Sheridan had the threat of Slanes Podge McGowan & Eanna Mooney well marshalled.

With seventeen played Kilbride could have had a goal only for the final pass to go to ground. Further points from Mickey Farrell and McMullen on nineteen and twenty minutes increased their advantage to three points. Another fine effort from Donnelly on twenty three had it to four before Slane struck two of the own. As injury time approached and it looking like Kilbride would lead by two they hit a wonder team goal. Wing back Craig Sheridan started the attacked in his own half back line and moments later he recieved the ball back as he struck from ten yards to the top corner of the net to give the keeper no chance. Kilbride were derserved leaders at the break having played exceptional at times to lead  1-7 to Slanes 0-5

Kilbride were the first to create a chance in the second half but Brian White shot narrowly wide. Both teams exchanged points the first from Joseph Donnelly on thirty three and another from McMullen on forty one. Donnelly was put through after more great build up play from O'Leary and Bruton put him in on goals only for Slanes defence to recover somewhat as he blasted wide from ten yards. Kilbrides defence were immense and Slane could find no way though and were forced to shoot from distance and on the rare occassion when they did threaten Craig Manning was on hand and he made a wonderful save to deny and keep his teams goal intact.

Great build up play and work rate was the foundations for this performance.Another point from McMullen on fifty seven kept it at five, before Kilbride Jeff Sheridan was fouled on the edge of the square. Referee Eamon Barry appeared to signal for a penalty but after consulting with his umpires a thirteen meter free was what was given. Mickey Farrell tapped over the resulting kick before Slane rallied with time running out with three late points as they searched for a goal. Kilbride found time for another point as injury time approached through Mickey Farrell. Three minutes of injury time was signalled but as for the previous sixty minutes Kilbrides defence was solid and Slane could find no way past...

Full time Kilbride 1-12 Slane 0-11...

Kilbride deserved this voctory and were exceptional at times, A real feature of this team is their work rate and solid defence and this creates a solid platform for good attacking play, strength and dept in the squad drives on all the players and with four players to come back into the panel for the next day it puts them in good sted for the quarter finals.
