JFC C: Excellent start for Simonstown

May 24, 2017

Simonstown's Andrew Kearney

Simonstown 1-15 Rathkenny 2-6

Simonstown's Junior Cs began their championship campaign with an excellent victory over Rathkenny today in Kilberry.

It was Rathkenny who started brightest with 2 quick points in the opening minutes. Rathkenny were awarded a penalty after an accidental trip down in the large rectangle. Despite Evan Burlingham guessing the right way there was little he could do about the penalty. Simonstown responded well to the goal with scores from Ben Tracey and Andrew Kearney. However Simonstown missed countless goal opportunities in the first half and were wasteful on front of goal. Simonstown were made to rue their mistakes and Rathkenny scored another well taken goal in the 20th minute. Score at half time was Simonstown 0-5 Rathkenny 2-3.

Simonstown began the second half with 3 new substitutions and the introduction of the experienced Paul Meade and Brian McDermott and the young vibrant Bailey McEvoy made a significant difference in the outcome of this game. After just 23 seconds of the second half Keith Brady scored a beautiful goal which meant it was a 1 point game. Alan Meade had a tremendous second half and won numerous kick outs to start attacks. Andrew Kearney also was deadly from the placed ball and gave the Simonstown players an outlet to attack. Simonstown's back line of Paul Gorman, Mick Fitzpatrick and Barry Fox stood firm in the second half and prevented goal opportunities by narrowing space and making some vital interceptions. All in all it was a much improved second half performance. Best for Simonstown Andrew Kearney, Alan Meade, Barry Fox, Gary McDonagh and Keith Brady
