Meath's Aoife Minogue

Liberty Insurance Intermediate Camogie Championship

Meath   3 - 14
Galway  2 - 11

Meath were playing Galway in Loughrea on Saturday afternoon in their third round of the All Ireland Intermediate Championship. With one win under their belt to Down two weeks ago, Meath knew the had to win to stay in contention.

They certainly didn't disappoint, Meath started this game with a point from Aoife Minogue from play within thirty seconds, Jane Dolan excelled in the next two minutes scoring two goals and a point, a great start. Galway first score coming from a free in the third minute from Rachel Monaghan, she added a second four minutes later from play.  Sinead Hackett received a good pass which she popped over in the eight minute. Galway started wining position and putting Meath backs  under pressure, Meath conceded four points to galway from frees which Rachel Monaghan took at her ease in next ten minutes. With Galway still trying to close the gap Meath's Megan Thynne got a fine point from play after thirteen minutes without scoring.
Katie Hackett for Meath was excellent, her catching and fielding of the ball earned Meath a further four points from frees as Galway tired to curtail her. Before the first half finished Galway added a further three points from Rachel Monaghan and Brenda Killelea. Aoife Minogue and Jane Dolan kept Meath seven points clear going in at half time with half time score Meath 2-9, Galway 0-8.

With this game going in Meath's favour John Davis had to keep his girls grounded and  focused on the challenge ahead, wining a free within the third minute Aoife Minogue stepped up to pop it over.

With Meath defending well, an over lap of a player caused Cliodhna Walshe Galway to come face to face with Emily Mangan which she slotted to the net. Galway went on to get a further three points from frees, Meath had gone fifteen minutes without scoring, but credit is due to Meath backs Claire Coffey, Aine Keogh and Grace Coleman and Emily Mangan who had to make a dash from her goal mouth to prevent a certain goal, in doing so she gave away a penalty, which she then saved.

Aoife Minogue got two points from frees on the eighteenth and twenty second minute to keep Meath in touch.  Jane Dolan got another from play on the twenty sixth minute. Galway got a free on twenty eight minute with Rachel Monaghan took and drove head high which took a deflection into the Meath net leaving Galway within two points of Meath.  Aoife Minogue got a further point from play and when she hassled her defender two minutes later the ball slipped to Jane Dolan who slotted it to the net, to the delight of the Meath side line and the Meath supporters who travelled to Loughrea.  Meath finished this game with a six points win over a strong Camogie County. The girls and management walked of the field proud of their achievement.  But the have to capitalise on this win when the meet Wexford in the last round next weekend August 2nd at home.
