BFL3: Ultan's pipped by a point

May 20, 2015

St Ultan's Stephen Quirke

Rath Tó 1-09
Naomh Ultain 1-08

Ratoath defeated St. Ultan's by the minimum in this Monday evening B-League fixture, played in Seán Newman Páirc, Bohermeen.

The visitors got the perfect start, when from the throw in they moved the ball quickly down to the edge of the square, and a well hit shot found the back of the net. St. Ultan's found it difficult to settle into the game, and mis-placed passes encouraged further Ratoath attacks. The south-Meath men added a further two points to their tally before the hosts' opening score. In fact, St. Ultan's first chance of the game was a goal chance, Stephen Quirke rattling the crossbar from close range. Somehow a 21 yard free kick that followed found its way wide of the mark and the Bohermeen/Martry combination had to wait a bit longer to open their account. A point each from Ciarán Rogers, Paul Murray, Stephen Quirke and Cian Dolan were all the hosts had to show for a half an hour's football while Ratoath finished the half with 1-05.

The second half saw a long scoreless period for both teams after Paul Murray's second point put just a goal between the teams. Unfortunately the game was also delayed for a short time as a Ratoath player suffered a serious injury and had to be stretchered from the field. The visitors created some well worked scores after this, but their efforts were limited by the excellent defending of Shane Dolan and Luke O'Reilly. As the game entered its final stages St. Ultan's were given a lifeline through Ciarán Rogers' goal. Moving the ball through the hands all the way up the pitch, the ball found Rogers who jinked by two defenders to finish to the net. There was now only one between the teams. Ratoath to their credit tagged on another point, but with just seconds remaining St. Ultan's worked another goal chance on the edge of the square. Stephen Quirke's shot went high over the bar however, and Ratoath took the two points from the encounter.
