April 21, 2015

Moynalty's Stephen Blackburn

Moynalty 0-12
Drumconrath 0-11

Moynalty got their junior d championship off to a flying start in a thriller at Kilmainhamwood on Sunday morning against north meath rivals Drumconrath.

This game was in the melting pot right up to the last kick when a brillant Gavin Lynch point ensured a great weekend for the Moynalty men .Moynalty had a great first half as they moved the ball at speed and caused the drums all sorts of problems scoring some great scores from Gavin Lynch, Stephen Blackburn, Mick Dorrigan, James Cassidy and David McMahon to lead by 0-07 to 0-02 after 20 minutes. However the Drums finished the half strongly and added 2 points to leave the scores at 0-07 to 0-04 at the break.

The second half started as the first ended with Drumconrath in control and after the third quarter the sides were level at 0-08 points a piece .From here to the finish the game was on  a knife edge as both sides traded points and it looked as if Moynalty had hit for victory when they opened up a 2 point lead 0-11 to 0-09 entering the last 5 minutes .But in true Drumconrath style they rallied and leighton irwin equalised in the last minute. Then it was down to Gavin Lynch finale who sent the large Moynalty contingent home happy.Best for the Moynalty men in what was a very commited team performance were James Cassidy, Sean Lynch, Pauric O'Connor, Gavin Lynch, Stephen Blackburn and Mick Dorrigan.

Drumconrath Report

In Kilmainhamwood

Moynalty 0-12 Drumconrath 0-11

The Daffodils are wilting and the Dandelions and Daisy's are coming into there own and that's a sure sign that the Junior D Championship is up and running.

The North Meath Clubs of Drumconrath and Moynalty descended on the wide open expanses of the quiet Hamlet of Kilmainhamwood for this High Noon show down. Both Clubs 1st Fifteens had won their opening 1st Round games and the emphasis was to keep their Clubs winning records enact.

The Kimainhamwood pitch with its wide open spaces was designed when the Local Club where a force at Senior Level in Meath when Brian Stafford, Larry McCormack and Raymond Cunningham where terrorizing defences and maybe not the best venue for the Warriors at Junior D level but both clubs pushed all this aside and got ready for battle.

Moynalty had up on 30 lads for the warm up as Drums management looked decidedly worried as each car that indicated at the gate was scanned for a potential player and while they ended with enough plus 1 as the Kilmainhamwood gate men enforced a strict "no boots - then pay in policy" which succeeded in annoying one irate Drums man at least !

Moynalty looked good early on and pointed twice but Paddy Carolan in his 1st Championship game in 6 years got Drums off the mark. Daniel Byrne added another point but Moynalty playing in Green went into overdrive and reeled off 5 points in a row to take a 0-7 to 0-2 lead as the Drumconrath lads seemed overawed.

Gavin Finnegan reignited the Drums challenge sporting their New White strip with a fine point and an injury time free from 40m by Daniel Myles left just 3 in it at the break 0-7 to 0-4.

Drumconrath's young lads got on the front foot but it was the ever green Leighton Irwin who slotted over the 1st score of the 2nd half.

The team in White suffered a blow when lively forward Daniel Byrne picked up a Black Card which appeared a little on the harsh side.

Drums with Robert McEntaggert, Carolan, Cathal Dunne and Aiden Tighe coming more into the game as Sean McMahon and Gavin Finnegan began to win more ball around the middle hit the next two points as Finnegan and then Alan Dunne both pointed.

Drumconrath just could not get in front as Moynalty ended a long barren stretch with a pointed free but when Conor O'Halloran was fouled the quick thinking Irwin found Sean McMahon in space and the sides where level again. Irwin himself added another point in answer to a Moynalty free. Chances went abegging on both sides but Moynalty struck for home with two points to lead 0-11 to 0-9 with five minutes left on the clock.

Drums with Sean Reilly making an inspirational change down field made another drive forward and Irwin knocked over a free and Carolan leveled the game with a fine point from out on the right.

However in injury time Moynalty got the winner and soon after the Full time whistle went in what was a close even game which should stand to both squads in the long run.
