JFC: Skryne out of luck

April 13, 2015

Skryne's Declan Morley with Eoin Marsh Dunsany during the opening round of the Meath JFC at Duleek.

Skryne 0-8 Dunsany 1-7.

The second game in windswept Duleek yesterday was the Junior championship between Skryne and neighbours Dunsany. In a very tight game the Reds lead at the break by 0-5 to 0-4 but the deciding score arrived very fortuitously midway through the second half when the Skryne defence were caught out in allowing a ball which seemed to be drifting wide go uncontested. The Dunsany forwards were more alert and from the resulting cross the ball finished in the net and with it went Skryne's chances of victory. The Blues were dealt a serious blow before a ball was kicked when the Seniors were forced into a change late in the first game due to a black card for Conor O'Brien meaning he was replaced by Aidan Tuite thus depriving the juniors of the services of the big midfielder. Newcomer Declan Mulvey was deemed unfit to play and then midway through the first half a serious injury to 2010 senior final man of the match Ian Davis diminished the scoring power of the team. Add to that a late injury to Allan Carty suggested the gods had forsaken the Blues for this game at least. Having said that Skryne had their chances to win the game even allowing for Dunsany shooting a far greater number of wides. Skryne did not use the wind advantage in the second half as well as they should have and with just a point between the sides late in the game missed a few scoring chances including a goal chance.

Dunsany 1-7

Skryne 0-8

Dunsany defied the predictions and came out on top in this local derby, played in a windswept Duleek on Saturday evening.

Dunsany played with the gale force wind in the first half and got off the mark with points from Kevin Keena and Declan Smyth. Skryne came back and levelled but points from Keena, Smyth and a superb long range point from corner back Padraig Maguire, who had switched to wing back.

Dunsany lead at the break 0-5 to 0-4

Dunsany further the lead with a point from Smyth but again Skryne rallied to close the gap.

The decisive score came when Danny Thynne latched on to a nothing ball to cross in to Keena who flicked it up with his left and volleyed home a superb goal.  Skryne to their credit again battled back but could not use the wind advantage and could only get within a point of their neighbours.  Eoin Marsh sealed the victory with point into the breeze.

Best for Dunsany Kevin Keena, Eoin Marsh, Padraig Maguire, Pierre Fox, Ryan Montague and Shane Brennan.
