Death of former Meath footballer John Daly

The late John Daly

So sad to report the death of former Meath footballer John Daly.

John, in his mid-sixties, was a star player with the old Martry club. A huge driving force from midfield, he had the ability to surge forward and notch vital scores.

John Daly led his club to the Meath intermediate final of 1972. Unfortunately for the Martry men they were overcome by a talented and rapidly emerging Summerhill combination.

In the semi-final of that competition Martry had out scored parish rivals Bohermeen. Bohermeen themselves won the intermediate title the following year and went all the way to the Meath senior decider of 1974. Again Summerhill proved the stumbling block.

Soon after both Martry and Bohermeen decided to amalgamate under the Bohermeen Martry Harps banner and  play at senior level. This combination operated for a number of years with John Daly one of their top performers.

John had come to the attention of the county senior selectors in the early '70s and in 1972 played at full forward for Meath in the championship.

Longford were beaten in the opening round after the Midlanders had built up a substantial half time lead. One of the main architects in the Royal revival was the Martry man who the following morning was christened ' Big John Daly' by the Dublin press.

John had earlier shot to prominence when winning a Meath under 14 championship medal with parish outfit Bohermeen in 1962. Later he was a key player on the talented Tara Mines inter-firms side of the early 80s.

John Daly was a nephew of John Cowley, aka, Tom Riordan of the cult RTE series The Riordans which ran from 1965 until 1979.
