September 15, 2014

Walterstown 4-09
Bective/Dunsany 2-12

Walterstown faced a tough challenge against a very strong Bective/Dunsany combination side in their first round of the championship. Walterstown had home advantage however due to soccer and college commitments from both sides the match was changed to a 7pm throw in under lights in Skryne.

Walterstown got the first point of the match inside the first minute through Mark Foy, however the next 12 minutes saw Bective/Dunsany score 1-02 without reply to build a 4 point lead.

Walterstown reduced the gap to just 2 points when Brian O'Connell scored the next 2 points of the game.  Bective/Dunsany increased the gap to 3 points before Brian O'Connell put the Blacks in front scoring 1-01 in 2 minutes to lead by 1. Mark Foy added a point before Paddy McCabe scored a goal in the 28th minute to leave the Blacks now leading by 5 points. The sides traded scores before the break to leave Walterstown leading at half time 2-06 to 1-05.

There was a delay at the start of the second half as Bective/Dunsany felt they should have had an extra point in the first half and their management asked the referee to add a point to their score, Walterstown management agreed to add the point to Bective/Dunsany meaning the combination side started the 2nd half 4 points behind.

This seemed to spur the Bective/Dunsany side on at the start  of the second half as they scored the first 4 points of  the half to bring the sides level.

Walterstown however were determined not to let the combination side go ahead and Jack Donnellan started a 10 minute scoring spree for the blacks scoring a goal before Sean Irwin added a fisted goal 2 minutes later, B.O'Connell and Andrew Moran then increased the blacks lead to 8 points by adding a point each. Bective/Dunsany were then awarded a controversial penalty however they could not take advantage of this and sent the resulting penalty wide. That spell proved to be crucial for the blacks as the Dunsany/Bective combination finished the strongest outscoring the blacks 1-03 to 0-1, however time ran out for the combination side and the Blacks secured the win in the championship.
