IHC: Drumree defeat Kilskyre

July 14, 2014

Drumree's Shane Troy
Drumree 2-14
Kilskyre 2-10

This was an eagerly anticipated match as both teams had made a great start to the championship with two wins from two, and in truth there was little between the teams throughout this very tough, physical match. Drumree will be very happy to have come out the victors as they were without the services of four players who started in their last championship outing due to injuries & holidays. Captain, Keith Commons was forced out of action just before throw in with an ankle injury.

Kilskyre came flying out of the traps & had 3 points on the scoreboard thanks to the stick of Derek Muldoon before Drumree registered their first point through Fearghal Delaney. It was soon Drumree who took over & had a goal on the scoreboard after a miss hit free on the 45 yard line by Josh Wall deceived the goal keeper & found its way into the top corner of the net. They kicked on from there & points from Shane Troy & Brian Coughlan kept the scoreboard ticking over. Troy influence on the game was beginning to grow & he converted a 70 yard free before scoring a nice point from play after a pin point pass from centre back Jimmy Gaughan. The hard hitting & physicality of the game was a sight to behold & no player was found wanting. As the first half drew to a close Drumree held a commanding lead of 1-09 to 0-06, however Kilskyre were to have the last say of the half when they struck for a goal, full forward Gary Reilly pounced after the Drumree defence had failed to clear the ball. Half time score Drumree 1-09 Kilskyre 1-06

Similar to the 1st half it was Kilskyre who started the 2nd half better than their counterparts & tapped over 3 early points to draw the sides level. They soon found themselves down to 14 men when the referee gave a straight red to James O'Higgins after a dangerous swing connected with Johnny Gilsenan's head. Gilsenan played on for a few minutes but had to be replaced shortly after.
Drumree took advantage of the extra man & moved Brian Coughlan back between the half back & full back lines & he cleared up a lot of ball from there. A goal followed soon after, when after a scramble in the Kilskyre resulted in Mark Devaney pouncing to poke the ball to the Kilskyre net. Some great work was being done around the middle of the park with Gareth Rooney & Fearghal Delaney covering every blade of grass in Trim. James Gaughan & Gavin Byrne was also rocks in the heart of the defence for Drumree while David Reilly & Josh Wall were seeing a lot of the ball up front.

Leinster Poc Fada bound Shane Troy soon showed why he was crowned Meath Poc Fada champion with a breath taking free that was still travelling as it sailed over the bar from 80 yards out. Duncan Geraghty was introduced early in the second half & gave an extra dimension to the team & got in on the scoring with a well taken point after selling a few dummies along the way. This was a well contested match & one would think that these two teams will meet again later on in the competition and if this game was anything to go by we could be in for a cracker.

Kilskyre report:

Kilskyre 2-10
Drumree 2-14

Venue Trim on a dull overcast Friday evening. Kilskyre and Intermediate hurling championship favourites Drumree locked heads in a tight physical and hard fought game which saw the Drumree men eventually come out on top. The Kilskyre outfit started the better team when they raced into a three point lead within the first five minutes, then Drumree shook the net with a well taken goal, it was game on. Drumree pushed on from there and had a lead of 1-9 to Kilskyres 0-6 with a minute to half-time, when Gary Reilly hit the net for Kilskyre to go in at half-time trailing by three points with a scoreline of Drumree 1-9 to Kilskyre 1-6.
In the second half it looked like a game that could have gone anyway with both sides trading scores, until what it looked like a very honest decision by the referee to red card James O'Higgins from Kilskyre. Down to fourteen men for most of the second half Kilskyre fought gallantly to the end where they eventually came up short. Kilskyre had some good performances from goalie Ronan Mc Guinness, Podge Muldoon at full back solid as ever, Peader Byrne and Seanie Geraghty in midfield and Gary Reilly preforming well at full forward.
Kilskyre will take this defeat on the chin and move on knowing they have the players and the ability to push on in this Intermediate hurling championship. One would think these two teams will meet again later on in the competition and if this game was anything to go by we could be in for a cracker!!
