Shortly afterwards wing back Barry Smith went on a great solo run up the field and made no mistake with his shot giving
the Gaeils their second goal of the half.

Rathkenny kept plugging away kicking some fine scores and had a great chance for a goal, but Stephen Reddy made a fine catch and cleared it down the field, which was a huge sigh of relief from the Kells supporters.

The second half started well for the visitors and they took a two point lead after six minutes. Martin Barrett narrowed the gap to one shortly after with his first point. Rathkenny found it very hard to hit target and many chances went wide including some very scoreable frees.

Stevy MacManus levelled matters for the Gaeils, and from here on in the never looked back scoring the next two points with Danny McGovern and Brian Hanlon from a free, sub Alan Hickey put three between them with a long range effort,on the twenty eight minute.

The visitors started well as Owen Elliott sent over inside the opening minute. The hosts finished to the net on three minutes after good work on the wing. Rathkenny then sent over the next six scores and missed two goal chances of their own. Scores from Stephen McCabe and Jack Gore levelled matters on ten minutes, before a brace from the lively Donal Curtis and another Jack Gore point left the visitors three up on thirteen minutes before the hosts second score, another goal, left the sides level on the quarter hour. The teams swapped the next four scores with Rathkenny scores coming from Jack Gore and Owen Elliott. Rathkenny edged in front just before the break through Ronan Curtis to leave it 0-9 to 2-2.
