Blackhall Gaels came away from Ashbourne with a six point victory over a disappointing Rathkenny side in the hoganstand.com Senior Championship game played last Sunday afternoon, August 12th.

Blackhall Gaels played with the aid of the strong breeze in the opening half and used it to their advantage as they sent over the first three points of the game in the opening ten minutes. Rathkenny had plenty of possession, but kicked some poor wides and landed too many point attempts into the Blackhall net minders hands. Rathkenny drew level on eleven minutes when John Donegan fielded and burst through the defence to finish cleverly to the net. It proved however to be their only score of the half as Blackhall kept plugging away and sent over three more scores to lead by double scores at the break, 0-06 to 1-00.

Blackhall Gaels extended the advantage further with a point on thirty four minutes. They were then awarded a penalty on thirty seven minutes, which was calmly slotted home to leave seven between the sides. County man Brian Meade sent over a huge score on thirty eight minutes to reduce the gap to six. He sent over another long range score three minutes later to leave five points between the sides. Scores were at a premium from here to the finish as the game became a stop start affair. Blackhall Gaels extended the lead to six on fifty four minutes before Owen Elliott sent over Rathkenny's final score on sixty minutes. There was still time for the Gaels to send over the last score in injury time.
