August 13, 2012

Niall Whearty St Patrick's
St. Patrick's 1-13
Nobber 1-08

St. Patrick's ran out winners against Nobber in Bohermeen in this hoganstand.com SFC tie on Saturday night.

Niall Whearty opened the scoring after two minutes from an acute angle before Andy Mooney swung over a great point while under pressure. Nobber got their first point on the board after six minutes which Niall Mooney quickly cancelled out with a well taken free. Brian Farrell then converted two quick frees for Nobber to level up the scores. Niall Whearty used his right foot to good effect after a good Niall Mooney run and then Nobber levelled up the scores once more before Pat's started to take over. Sharpshooter Niall Whearty knocked over two more quick points and Niall Mooney sent the ball over the bar after a good run.

St. Patrick's then went six points to the good when full-forward colossus Cormac Sullivan got a goal with a great diving fisted effort after a fantastic flick by Niall Whearty to set him up. Nobber replied with a point of their own before Barry Campbell blazed the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Brian Farrell converted another free for Nobber before form man Niall Whearty scored another great point from play and Ray Russell rounded off the first half scoring with a well taken point after trojan work by Cormac Sullivan to leave the halftime scores St.Patrick's 1-10 Nobber 0-06.

St. Pat's started the second half well when Barry Campbell knocked over a sensational point from near the sideline. Campbell followed this up with another good score and substitute Donal Landy, on for the injured Niall Whearty, got straight in on the act with another point to stretch Pat's lead to ten points. Just as it looked like Pat's were going to run riot Nobber fought their way back into the game. Another Farrell free was quickly followed up with the award of a penalty that was emphatically dispatched to the bottom corner.

On 41 minutes Nobber reduced the deficit to five points and it looked like Pat's might find themselves in a bit of trouble. However, this proved to be the last score of the game from either side as the game got scrappy and disjointed. Some stern defending from the Pat's defence, especially outstanding young fullback David McQuillan and corner back David Stafford, kept the Nobber attack very quiet while at the other end of the pitch Pat's kicked several wides. While Pat's continued to squander chances Nobber never really looked like getting back into the game as the Pat's defence held firm and the score-line finished St.Patrick's 1-13 Nobber 1-08.

Best for the Pat's were David McQuillan, David Stafford and Niall Whearty.
