IFC: Share of the spoils for Gaeil Colmcille

20 April 2012

Gaeil Colmcille's Seamus Mattimoe
Gaeil Colmcille 0-11
Trim 1-08

Gaeil Colmcille and Trim ended up all square at the end of a tough and tight Meade Potato & Co. IFC encounter played in Athboy on Friday night.

Trim got off to a better start and had the first two points on the board after twelve minutes. Seamus Mattimoe got the Kellsmen going two minutes later with a free. That seemed to settle matters.

Danny McGovern levelled it up with his first score of the game, and a well-struck point from Brian Hanlon gave the Gaeils the lead a few minutes later. Trim kept up the fight and levelled matters going into the last ten minutes at (0-03) each. Both teams had a lot of missed opportunities, but it was the Gaeils who went two up with points from Seamus Mattimoe and Brian Hanlon. Trim brought it back to just one coming up to half time and then took the lead with a well struck goal, leaving Trim leading by (1-04) to (0-05) at the break.

In the second half Trim got their first score from a free and looked to have the upper hand, but the Gaeils kept plugging away with a point from a Brian Hanlon free and a great point from wing half back Alan Hickey.

Trim started to dominate but wide of the target on a few occasions kept the Gaeils hanging in there. Conditions started to get very difficult for both teams as the heavy rain took its toll on the pitch for most of the second half.

Things looked bright for last year's relegated senior team as they took a three point lead in the dying seconds of the game but Jody Devine's charges were not going to give up just yet. The forwards kept running at Trim causing them to foul. Mattimoe, Hanlon and Mattimoe again - all from frees - well into time added on, gave them a last gasp draw and one that they truly deserved,
