SFC: A breeze for the Brews Hill boys

O'Mahonys finished with 14 points to spare over Oldcastle in this hoganstand.com SFC Group C opener at Kells on Saturday evening.

The outcome was never in doubt though it wasn't until the fifth minute of the second-half that more than two scores separated the sides.

When David Murtagh pointed, with assistance from Alan Forde and substitute Daragh Smyth, at the pavilion end the scoreboard nearby read 1-5 to 0-1.

By the end eight different O'Mahonys' players were on the scoresheet, seven from play including two replacements.

One of them Daragh Smyth scored three points folllowing his 33rd minute introduction for the injured Shane McKeigue, who had been doing well at midfield.

Mark Ward, Barry Regan, Niall McKeigue and Cormac McGuinness were all absent for the Navan men through injury.

Similarly indisposed for Oldcastle were Ronan Farrelly and county man Paddy Gilsenan.

Niall Mangan accounted for half of Oldcastle's tally and registered his side's first score from play in the 45th minute.

Alan McCann and substitute Robbie Farrelly also scored for Oldcastle in the final quarter. During this time O'Mahonys midfielder Damien Moran did well to keep prevent the side from the north west from getting in for a goal.

The first-half was a low key affair with just five scores being registered. The pick of them was Alan Forde's ninth minute goal that left it 1-2 to 0-0.

Another ten minutes passed before the next score, Oldcastle's opener courtesy of a Mangan free.

Shortly after O'Mahonys managed their first point from play with Forde registering. Oldcastle 'keeper Paddy Coakley saved smartly from Stephen Bray to prevent a second goal for David Nelson's charges just before half-time when it was 1-3 to 0-1.
