Beko proud to support Dunshaughlin underage

November 27, 2011
Despite the Keegan Cup slipping through their fingers, Dunshaughlin can still reflect on their most successful year in nearly a decade. One man who took much encouragement and satisfaction from their progress is former player Shane Kelly, whose employers Beko Ireland are proud sponsors to the Dunshaughlin U10s.

One of the stories of the Meath GAA year was Dunshaughlin's re-emergence as a major force in senior football.
Despite suffering a heartbreaking county final defeat to Summerhill after a replay and extra-time, the black and ambers could still hold their heads high. They also had the consolation of winning the Feis Cup, which was the club's first piece of senior silverware since the last of their three-in-a-row of Keegan Cups in 2002, and with one of the best underage structures in the county, a new and exciting era beckons.

"Overall, it was a fantastic year," enthuses club committee member Shane Kelly, who works as a sales executive with Beko Ireland.
"We won the Feis Cup and were unlucky not to win the senior championship as well. We also contested the 'B' League final against Donaghmore/Ashbourne. Over the past 18 months or so, our younger players have come to the fore. They grew up watching players from the three-in-a-row team and they want to be just as successful as them. Before we won the Keegan Cup for the first time in 2000, we lost the previous year's final, so hopefully history will repeat itself now."

Shane, who played in Dunshaughlin's 1999 county final defeat to Skyrne and is a brother of former county player Niall, who was one of the stars of the great side that claimed a hat-trick of Keegan Cups between 2000 and '02 and also won the Leinster club championship in the latter year, was delighted to be in a position to secure sponsorship for the club's U10 team.
"I've been working for Beko for the past nine years and the sponsorship for the U10s is my way of giving something back to the club," he explains.

"It's a great club with a great underage structure and I cannot praise the people who are involved enough. The likes of Jim Smith (chairman and former inter-county referee), Neil O'Dwyer (secretary), Jim Mitchell (underage chairman) and Caroline Malone (underage secretary) are doing tremendous work. The club is very proactive and the recent re-launch of its new-look website,
www.dunshaughlingaa.com, is further proof of this.

"The underage is really strong now, which bodes well for the future. For years, we were joined with Drumree and played under the St. Martin's banner, but we went out on our own about three years ago and haven't looked back since."

Like Beko, Dunshaughlin are eager to build on the success they've enjoyed to date. This year marked their reawakening as a major footballing force and, while the Keegan Cup eluded them, their 1-10 to 1-6 victory over neighbours Blackhall Gaels in the Feis Cup final provided some compensation for losing the county final to Summerhill.

Played just a couple of weeks after the county final replay, the Feis Cup decider was basically a game of two halves with Dunshaughlin overturning a four-point interval deficit to win by four. Despite enjoying lots of possession in the opening half, the black and ambers struggled for scores and looked to be in trouble when trailing by 0-4 to 1-5 at the short whistle.

But four unanswered points from team captain Ray Maloney, his midfield partner John Crimmins and Trevor Dowd (two) brought them level, only for the Kilcloon/Batterstown men to instantly regain the lead. However, a Cathal 'Nipper' O'Dwyer goal finally turned the tide in Dunshaughlin's favour and they closed out the win with further scores from Conor Devereux and Niall Kelly, who came off the bench to land a long-range free in stoppage-time.
