Championship and league revamps get go ahead

January 31, 2012
The latest proposals by the competitions review committee to revamp the football championships and leagues were given the green light at Monday night's county committee meeting in Aras Tailteann.

Come 2014 the SFC, IFC and JFC will each comprise of 18 teams as opposed to the original figures of 18, 12 and 24. The 18 teams for the senior grade will be achieved for 2013 with no team to be relegated this year.

There will be 15 sides (three groups of five) in this year's IFC at the end of which there will be no relegation and the two JFC finalists in 2013 will be promoted. Meanwhile the number of teams in the JFC will be reduced from 23 to 18 over the next three terms. With two teams to be relegated to the junior B grade next year.

Brendan Cummins pointed out that all teams will be guaranteed five games when the three sixes format is eventually arrived at. There was no opposition to the proposals.

Although not all the clubs were happy with the AFLs format of here being 14 teams in Divisions 1 and 2 and 12 in Divisions 3 and 4 come 2014, the proposals were carried with a good bit to spare on a show of hands.

This year Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be the same as last year with 12 teams in each and there will be 16 in Division 4. Again concerns were expressed by some clubs, especially dual clubs, about having to fulfil 15 league fixtures as well as playing in a number of other competitions.

Looking further ahead, fears were expressed about having to play 13 league games with Owen Heaney (Wolfe Tones) and Oliver Melia (Moylagh) among the dissenting voices. However, Eugene Comaskey of Carnaross felt that too much time was being wasted talking about the matter and suggested that "we give it a try."

The A FL Division 4 will have an earlier start with the competition kicking off this Sunday.

The CCCC personnel for 2012 comprises of Conor Tormey, Jimmy Henry, Francis Flynn, Oliver Cudden, Michael Mullally and Anthony Monaghan while the finance committee will be made up of Pat Clerkin, Dessie Murtagh, Barney Allen, Brendan Cummins, Tara Rowan and Cyril Creavin.

Hurling committee chairman Francis Lynch announced that St Patrick's will be fielding a junior hurling team this year after a lapse of a few years.
