Mary O'Reilly-Staunton/Navan O'Mahonys Bursary

In conjunction with Navan O'Mahonys, the family of Mary O'Reilly-Staunton have launched a trust to provide bursaries to club members who are studying a third level institution in the state.

Background information

Mary O'Reilly-Staunton died from non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at the relatively young age of 56 (in December 2010). Her lifetime was spent in the field of education and she dedicated the final years of her life to working with adults who were experiencing various degrees of intellectual, emotional, phychological and physical disabilities.

Mary's family is honoured and privileged to establish, in conjunction with Navan O'Mahonys GAA club, the Mary O'Reilly-Staunton/Navan O'Mahonys Trust foundation.

The bursaries will provide some support for third level students to pursue an undergraduate degree at a recognised third level institution within the Republic of Ireland.

The primary aim of the bursaries is to support the third level studies of innovative individuals, that will ultimately contribute to the cultural, social and economic development of the awardee.

Two bursaries of €2,000 each will be awarded. The foundation is committed to this scheme for the current academic year and the academic years of 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.

Each bursary is the the duration of just one academic year, successful candidates will not be disqualified from applying for subsequent bursaries.

Requirements:

• The scheme is open to all Navan O'Mahonys players - male and female - who are currently attending a recognised third level institution in the Republic of Ireland.
• Applicants must have played an aggregate of at least five championship matches over the last two season.
• Name and contacts of two suitable references (non-GAA) must be provided.
• Applicants are requested to provide a brief personal statement on their interest and commitment to their area of study, outling the reasons for selecting their current course of study and academic institution.


Assessment process

All applicants will be assessed by a review panel that will shortlist suitable candidates for interviews by members of the assessment panel. The assessment panel consists of :-

Dr Noel Lowndes, Professor of Bio-Chemistry, NUI, Galway.

An t-Uasal Sean O Diomasaigh, former schools inspector and current principal of Sacred Heart of Jesus NS, Mulhuddart, Dublin.

Mrs Karen Fox, Secretary, Navan O'Mahonys GAA Club.
