Fantastic year for St Cuthbert's

November 27, 2010
Since the formation of St Cuthbert's Bohermeen in 1983, there have been very few years when some of the teams have not won silverware. However no year can compare to the success in 2010 when no fewer than 10 competitions have been won by the various sides. The u-14 team led the way as they won four county titles while the u-12 and u-16 squads were both successful twice. The u-17 team won their respective league while the players from the u-10's won their section of the well organised North Meath league in Drumconrath.

The hard work and planning done a number of years ago by the club are beginning to come to fruition," according to Chairman George Ryan. He continues, "Four years ago we were in a position where we felt there was a lack of interest in football by the youngsters in the parish. We put a plan in place to try and encourage as many boys and girls to come and play football. We began by running a school blitz among the three schools in the parish and then started up u-6 ,u-8 and u-10 coaching sessions. Ivor O'Halloran was very instrumental in the initial years and since that we have men like Sean Yore, Mattie Rogers and Liam 'Dutch' Rennicks involved at this level. Recently Eamon Barry and Kit Henry, both successful coaches have come on board at this level and their influence is very noticeable. Last year we had two u-13 teams so we entered two u-14 teams this year and also two teams again at u-13. While it is great to win competitions, it is very important that everyone gets matches."
The u-14 team were first to taste victory this year when they won the Spring League in Pairc Tailteann with a hard-earned victory over Dunsany. They followed that up by overcoming Nobber in the Knock-out Championship and Na Fianna in the Summer League. The quartet of victories was gained in the Shield Final of the Meath u-14 7 aside competition. It was a remarkable achievement in winning all competitions and just reward for the hard work put in by manager Brian O'Rourke.
The u-12 team under the management of Jimmy Smyth and Kit Henry, won the first of their double by beating Skryne in Pairc Tailteann. They followed up by claiming the Summer League title at the expense of Round Towers in Bohermeen.
The u-16's also claimed the first of their two victories of the season in Pairc Tailteann. They had three points to spare over Killeary Emmets - the combination side of Castletown and Syddan. Their second piece of silverware was the inaugural u-16 Summer League Shield when they accounted for the challenge of neighbours Wolfe Tones in Gibbstown. The highlight of that campaign was a semi-final win over Dunshaughlin by two points after being twelve points in arrears at the interval and not even scoring in that period. John Kavanagh was manager of this squad with Pat Farrell and Danny Rispin also involved.
Amazingly the u-17's claimed their piece of silverware also on the county grounds of Pairc Tailteann. They overcame a gallant Ballinabrackey side by the minimum of margins. The victory was all the sweeter as the 'Bracks had beaten St Cuthbert's earlier in the season in the minor league final after a replay. On the same week-end as the u-17 success the u-10's claimed victory in the final of the Farrell Cup in Drumconrath. The u-15 team were unlucky in their league when they lost the semi final by one point to Inny Gaels. So overall it was a most successful year for St Cuthbert's.
Chairman George Ryan also recalls the off -field success.
"The silverware is what people will see and quite rightly so. However the club committee also works extremely hard. Once again we brought buses to all the Meath matches this year in Portlaoise and Croke Park. We had our charity match at the beginning of the season and continue with our annual Family Fun Day. The support from all the parents is vital to our success and they are never found wanting. All the mentors put in extra-ordinary effort and time and most importantly the children enjoy themselves," added George.
