August 23, 2010

Gaeil Colmcille's Barry Tormay and Ollie Murphy Carnaross collide during the Meath IFC quarter final at Pairc Tailteann.
Carnaross 2-8
Gaeil Colmcille 1-9

Carnaross qualified for the Intermediate semi-final after a tough tussle with neighbours Gaeil Colmcille.

Niall McDonnell opened the scoring with a well struck point from play before the Kells side levelled matters with a free. McDonnell was causing the Gaeil Colmcille defence a lot of problems and after ten minutes he was hauled down inside the area. John L McGee calmly finished to the net from the spot to give Carnaross a three point lead. Gaeil Colmcille replied strongly and hit three points from play while Carnaross twice seen pointed efforts come back off the post. Carnaross managed to restore their three point lead once again when John L McGee connected with a long ball to finish to the net. He could have had another goal moments later from an identical move but seen his effort just go over the crossbar. Damian Smith extended the lead further with a point from play. A free from Gaeil Colmcille was cancelled out by a point from Ollie Murphy to leave Carnaross five in front. On the stroke of half-time, Gaeil Colmcille got through the Carnaross defence to score a goal which reduced the margin leaving Carnaross 2-4 to 1-5 in front at the break.

The opening ten minutes of the second half only produced a point each with Damian Smith hitting the target for Carnaross. Ollie Murphy converted another free before three points in a row from Gaeil Colmcille left the sides level with ten minutes remaining. Both sides battled hard but good defending from Carnaross denied Gaeil Colmcille from going in front for the first time. Wing back Charles Brogan then put Carnaross in front again but the game was far from won. In the second minute of injury time Ollie Murphy scored a free which gave Carnaross a well deserved victory. It was the first time Carnaross have beaten Gaeil Colmcille in a Championship game since their win in the senior grade in 1994 and they will now meet another neighbouring team, St. Michaels, in the semi-final.
