Rathkenny proved too strong for Carnaross in the first round of the Minor League which was played on St.Patricks day.
An early goal for the home side was followed with a couple of points. Charles Brogan replied with a point from a fifty, and following points from John Ward, John Carpenter and Charles Brogan again, Carnaross went in at half-time trailing by three points, 1-4 to 0-4.
Rathkenny got the first couple of scores in the second-half to stretch their lead but Carnaross did not give up. Cian Gillic scored a great long range point, and further points from John Carpenter, Charles Brogan and John Ward reduced the Rathkenny lead to just 4 points with time almost up. In the final attack from Carnaross, John Ward was taken down in the square and Charles Brogan scored a goal from the resulting penalty to leave just a point between the teams. However the referee blew the final whistle on the kick out to leave Rathkenny the winners by a point.
Best for Carnaross were Cian Gillic in defence, Charles Brogan at midfield and John Carpenter and John Ward in attack.
