Rathkenny lost their opening All County B league division 4 game to hosts Simonstown last Sunday afternoon, March 7th.
In a typical first round affair both sides were ring rusty and Rathkenny will rue a host of missed scoring opportunities as they were defeated by five points. It was a tight opening half which Rathkenny edged on the scoreboard, leading by a point at the break, 0-04 to 0-03. The Rathkenny scores coming from Declan Crosbie, Tommy McKeever and a brace from Dermot Downey. Rathkennys cause was not helped when Colm Gore had to leave the field after an accidental clash of heads.
Despite a lot of second half possession, Rathkenny could not get going and had to rely on corner back Jason Gore for both second half scores. Simonstown got the all important second half goal from Keith Cross to put a bit of daylight between the teams. Rathkenny will need to improve things if they are to make any headway in this competition.
