AFL 1: Skryne overcome champions Tones

March 02, 2010

Skryne's Vinny Reilly
Skryne 1-14
Wolfe Tones 1-9

In a very entertaining game, the home side overcame the challenge from last year's senior county finalists Wolfe Tones at Fr McManus Park on Sunday afternoon in Skryne's second Div 1 clash this year.

Skryne took the lead from the start, with two points from corner forward Patrick O'Rourke and two more from Allan Carty and Ian Davis, compared to just a single score from Wolfe Tones in the first quarter. With 25 minutes gone in the first half, Kevin Mulvaney went on a scoring spree, with a goal and a point within a minute of each other and he added another point before the half time whistle, along with further scores from Carty and James Hegarty. Wolfe Tones hit numerous wides and allowed Skryne to go in at half time with a 1-8 to 0-3 lead.

While Skryne came out with all guns blazing, adding two more points to their tally from O'Rourke and Hegarty, Wolfe Tones made a comeback into the game, scoring 1-4 unanswered and leaving only three points between the teams with only ten minutes of play remaining. O'Rourke put three more points over the bar and another from Hegarty in the last minutes of play, along with a couple of good saves from goalkeeper Felim O'Rourke, ensured Skryne's first win in the league.

Best for Skryne were substitute Johnny Quinn, who replaced an injured Barry Farrell in the first half, Vinny O'Reilly, mid-fielder Aidan Tuite, David Ryan and Patrick O'Rourke.
