Jockeys V Trainers Charity GAA Football Match 2009Jockeys 3-07Trainer 2-10Despite harsh winter conditions, the Ken Whelan managed Jockeys team lined out to face a trainers side managed by Noel Meade on Saturday night at Simonstown GFC, Navan in order to raise much needed funds for Temple Street Children's University Hospital. Once referee Andrew 'Sandy' Shaw got the match underway, the Jockeys wasted no time in getting some scores on the board. Jockey Alan Crowe made light of fullback John 'Shark' Hanlon by netting three goals in quick concession. A reshuffle of the trainers team saw goalkeeper Michael Grassick being substituted for an unknown 'assistant trainer' of Meades. The trainers, lead by a man of the match performance from Tony Martin turned the game back in their favour despite the best efforts of Paddy Flood and Andrew Duff on the Jockeys side. Barry Geraghty and Adrian Keatley exchanged scores before the half time break. The second half saw many substitutions from the Jockey with even the manager Ken Whelan coming on to try and russle things up. Heavyweights, Gordon Elliott and Norman Geraghty managed to keep the Jockeys quiet for a few minutes. Despite Andy Oliver making good use of his previous rugby experience at tackling, the Jockeys managed to steal a lead.Further scores from another of Meades 'assistant trainers' Colm O'Brien and also Tom Dreaper left the trainers team with a one point advantage with minutes on the clock. After a controversial decision by Sandy Shaw to award a 14 yard free in favour of the jockeys, Rodger Loughrane pointed the score with ease to level the game. The game ended in a draw with Tony Matin receiving the award for man of the match and former Kildare footballer Willie McCreery being awarded player in most need of improvement.Jockeys: R.
