Meath SHC final: Kildalkey end 57-year wait
October 05, 2009

Kildalkey captain Martin Doran raises the Jubilee Cup after victory over Dunboyne at Pairc Tailteann
Kildalkey outscored Dunboyne in the Fox Bookmakers SHC final to end a 57-year wait in their quest for the Jubilee Cup.
Pat O'Halloran's men - who lost to Kilmessan in last year's decider after a replay - made most of the running and having played with the wind in the opening half were 0-11 to 0-6 ahead at the break.
Despite conceding the first score of the second period the Mairtin Doran captained side were boosted by Nick Fitzgerald's 37th minute goal and were 13 points clear less than 20 minutes later.
Goals in the latter stages from Michael Dunne and Gary Watters were merely windown dressing for a dispointing side who were a distant second on the day.
Fittingly, Kildalkey had the last say with Sean Heavey becoming the seventh player in blue and white to register from open play.
Apart from their goals, Dunboyne managed just one other such score, a ninth minute point from Dunne that left his side trailing by 0-2 to 0-3.
A trio of pointed Hackett frees saw Dunboyne hit the front for the only time, 0-5 to 0-4, in the 18th minute.
That advantage was quickly negated with Padraig Geoghegan levelling matters before Derek Doran restored Kilkdalkey's advantage and they were never subsequently caught.
Seven second-quarter points on the spin moved Kildalkey six points clear before Hackett closed the scoring in first-half stoppage time.
When the same player landed a placed ball at the town end, wind-assisted Dunboyne were just four points in arrears.
Kildalkey's positive response began with Fitzgerald's goal as Dunboyne resistance crumbled. The team in blue and white hit 1-6 without reply in 18 second-half minute to the delight of their large contingent of supporters.
Significantly all of the scores in the sequence came from play and by the 55th minute it was 1-17 to 0-7.
In between the two Dunboyne goals Kirby - who picked up the man-of-the-match award - landed his side's only second-half score from a free.
