O'Rourke going nowhere

November 28, 2008
Rising Meath football star Shane O'Rourke has ruled out a move to the AFL, insisting that his heart is set on helping restore the glory days to the Royal County. The son of Meath legend and media pundit Colm has been linked with a move to Aussie Rules on a number of occasions in recent years, but his only concern at the moment is regaining full fitness after an injury plagued season, and being ready to face Dublin in the next year's Leinster championship opener. "The first time I was approached, I was only 17. I thought it was too soon," he said. "Then the end of last year there was talk about it again but I had made up my mind in 2005 and I was sticking by it. I want to stick with football and get an All-Ireland with Meath - that would be the priority." Recalling last month's draw for the 2009 championship which pitted Meath against their old rivals, O'Rourke said: "I remember watching the draw. There were four teams left, Meath and Dublin were still in it. "I was sitting with one of the lads and I said: "Imagine if we got Dublin. "I couldn't believe it. Meath and Dublin is the biggest game you'll ever play for Meath. Beating Dublin is the just the be all and end all."
