U17 and 13 titles for Na Fianna
November 24, 2008
Na Fianna 0-12
Walterstown 0-9
Na Fianna captured the O'Reilly & Co Solicitors Under 17 Division 2 title on Sunday with a three point victory over Walterstown at a windswept Donaghmore/Ashbourne pitch.
The gale force breeze that blew directly down the pitch made this a real game of two halves. Having won the toss, team captain Fergal O'Connor elected to play against the wind in the first half.
As expected Walterstown started the game in strong fashion and had a number of promising attacks before they recorded their first point after eight minutes. However tenacious work from the Na Fianna defence, including Keith Jordan, Eoin Murray and John O'Lone kept the Walterstown attack to six first half points. Na Fianna scored their only point of the first half on the stroke of half time to leave the score Walterstown 0-6 to Na Fianna 0-1.
As the second half started Na Fianna began the task of eating into the Walterstown lead and points from Harrison Silke and Daniel Queeney had the scores level at seven points each with ten minutes to go. However the hard working Walterstown forwards regained the lead with an excellent free before Lewis Dowling; John O'Lone and Sean O'Neill added further points. As the game entered the dying minutes Na Fianna had a two point lead and defending their goal with all their might. A Harrison Silke final point gave the South Meath boys a comforting three point margin before the referee blew the final whistle. The conditions and the quality of the opposition required all players to work hard for every ball and the Na Fianna players, encouraged by their mentors Brian Queeney; Pat Flynn and Jason Henrick, gave their all to ensure victory.

Na Fianna captured the Division 2B Under 13 Football title last Thursday evening in Dunganny with a victory over Rathkenny.
While the scoreline would indicate an easy victory for the Na Fianna team, the game was much more competitive than the scoreline suggests. Rathkenny had sixteen wides and at least three good goal opportunities saved off the line. The game started with both sets of players having difficulty in coming to grips with the slippery surface and the glare of the lights Rathkenny had recorded three wides before Na Fianna started their scoring with points from corner forward Paul Kennedy and goals from Stuart Lumb and Alan Gillespie. Further Na Fianna scores, matched by Rathkenny wides, left the half time score Na Fianna 3-5 to no score.
Rathkenny began to find their shooting range at the start of the second half and scored three points without reply. However excellent defence work by Anthony Neary, Sean Ryan and Jonathan McCloskey in goals allowed Na Fianna to regain the upper hand and further scores from Graham Reynolds, Robbie Fagan, Ben Caldwell, and Joshua Devine ensured the Na Fianna victory.
In front of a large Na Fianna support, the trophy was presented by Juvenile Board Vice chairman, John Kavanagh, to team captain Graham Reynolds.
