A FL: Tones keep up final hunt

October 06, 2008

'Tones' top marksman Cian Ward
Wolfe Tones 1-9 Dunshaughlin 0-5 Tones maintained their push for a Division 1 final spot with a well deserved win over a Dunshaughlin side, who could have lost by more only for the brilliance of Ronan Gogan in goals. Dunshaughlin opened the scoring from a Niall Kelly free in the third minute which was quickly cancelled out by a free from Cian Ward. Paul Byrne was unlucky to see his effort come back off the bar in the 8th minute but the visitors quickly responded with a brace of points from David Devereux and Conor Staunton to go 0-3 to 0-1 up. Tiernan sent McGrath through on goal in the 15th minute but his effort was well blocked however within a minute McGrath turned provider for Ward who carried on goalwards before finishing to the net. Dunshaughlin once again responded well and tagged on another brace of points the second of which came in the 26th minute and was to be their final score of the match. A superb fetch from Corrigan and a long ball into Ward ended with the ball superbly over the bar to send the sides in at the break level. Sub Darragh Browne put Tones in front in the 31st minute and Ward was denied his second goal by a fine double save from the keeper in the 33rd minute but Ward pointed superbly from a sideline to stretch the home sides advantage to 1-4 to 0-5. Niall McLoughlin was fouled and Tiernan pointed the resultant free as Tones dominated. Tones tagged on four more points all from Ward as they saw out time and grabbed the two points needed to stay in contention for league honours. Best for Tones were Brady, Fox and Ward with a total of 1-7.
