Unprecedented quiet times on the GAA front and with no return on the horizon because of Covid-19 we have come up with a novel way to keeping your Royal GAA mind occupied.
Since 1987 we have won four All-Ireland finals. You the reader can have a say in picking our Best XV from that glorious era.
This is a little like the full back position, very difficult to pick one player from three former Meath captains.
The oldest of the three, Joe Cassells, led the Royals to the promised land in 1988 and was a brilliant servant to the Green and Gold both as a player and selector. A career that started in 1974 and earned the O'Mahony's man two All Ireland's, four Leinster's and two NFL's. Joe also started on the '40 in the 1987 Sam Maguire triumph.
Tommy Dowd could literally play anywhere in the forward line and captained Meath to the 1996 win over Cork. In a very illustrious career the Dunderry star picked up two All Ireland's, four Leinsters and an impressive four All Star awards.
We have already covered the 2001 captain, Trevor Giles, who wore the Number 10 jersey in 1996 and was chosen on the 40 for the '99 win. Like Dowd, the Skryne man would fit in anywhere, from the half back line up, on this team.
