Wolfe Tone's David O'Neill with Eamonn Magee Drumbaragh during the Meath Division 6 B FL final at Cortown

Bhulf Tón 3-7 Drumbaragh 1-6

Wolfe Tones emerged as winners of this B-League Division 6 decider played in Cortown on Sunday evening. The difficult conditions made for a ferociously competitive spectacle where both sided never gave an inch. The third quarter proved lucrative for the Tones and three goals on the trot ultimately decided the fixture in favour of Tony Kearney’s charges. To view photos from this game click here

Scores were at a premium in the first half as both defences made life extremely difficult for their opposite numbers. Drumbaragh were more efficient in converting their chances and had built up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead after 20 minutes, but Tones rallied well to end narrow the deficit to the minimum by half time. Oisin Corrigan responsible for all of Tones’ first half points from deadballs.

Half time - Wolfe Tones 0-4 Drumbaragh 0-5.

Not long after the restart, Tones took command on the scoreboard with three goals. Firstly, a long range Corrigan free dropped short to the edge of the square and it was Adam O’Neill who rose tallest to gather before finding a gap in a sea of bodies to find the net. Minutes later the industrious Mark Coleman intercepted a ball in the Drumbaragh defence and found the onrushing Adam O’Neill who was hauled down in front of goal for a penalty kick. Oisin Corrigan clinically dispatched the resultant spot kick. Tom Gavigan was next to get in on the act. A patient build up allowed Gavigan to drift to the back post and he was hand to fetch a wayward point attempt and finish to the net.

At 3-4 to 0-5, Wolfe Tones could call on their experienced campaigners to see out the match and stood resolute in defence for the remainder of the game. Drumbaragh did raise a green flag from a penalty kick themselves but the issue never looked in doubt. Corrigan, Gavigan and Rossa McDonnell finished out the scoring for the Tones to earn them their first piece of silverware for the year. They will be hoping to add to this later in the year as they prepare for the knockout stages of the Junior D championship.

Best for Wolfe Tones were Mark Coleman, Oisin Corrigan, Tom Gavigan, Kieran Conway and the McLoughlin brothers.
