August 22, 2019

A brave block during the Round Towers versus St Marys U14 Division 3 Cup final at Paddy O'Brien Park

Round Towers 1-10   St Mary's 2-4

Round Towers and St Mary's battled it out in Paddy O'Brien Park in the Under 14 Division 3 Cup final. With Round Towers emerging victorious from the rain storm that engulfed the Navan venue in the closing stages in a tense and entertaining U14 Rionn 3 Cup Final.

Excellent football was on view for the large crowd that gathered from both clubs. St Mary's started the brighter 1-2 to no score after 12 minutes, Liam Lynch bagging the goal for Marys.

But Towers slowly kicked into gear. Relentless running by captain Carl McGovern, Marcus Waters and Josh Roe Hennessy stemmed the onslaught from St Mary's footballing giants Liam O'Brien and Adam Scott who were more than a handful in midfield.

Mikey Mongey and Scott Lynch were soon on target and Towers got the score board moving. The fearless Towers full back line Jack Galligan, Jake Balfe and Michael Waters shored up the defence limiting St Mary's to one point for the remainder of the first half. In no small part to some fine keeping from Glen Gavagan.

Half time: Round Towers 0-07  St Mary's 1-03

The second half was a repeat of the first, Towers conceeding 4 points within 10mins. Adam Scott also netting a goal to put tower's under immense pressure.

However as the skies darkened over Paddy O'Brien Park Towers brewed up a storm of their own. Shea McManus and Cameron Feehan kicked into gear. Both contributing fine points to reduce the deficit. Ronan McCauley who was very unlucky not score as he hit the upright for towers that would have reduced the Mary's lead even further. As was Tiaranan Timmons who's strong play set up several scores for Towers.

Towers man of the match Michael Hoey was then moved up to half forward position where he tormented St Mary's, his efforts were key to Towers success. As the teams drew level Towers seemed to be gathering pace, despite the heroic defending of St Mary's Andrew Cudden, St Mary's via San Francisco parish USA.

Then when the game was in the balance Towers Jack Canavan stepped up to the mark smashing home a goal to give Towers a two point advantage.

Jake Madden ensured that there was no escape for St Marys as the skies opened in biblical fashion Madden mopped up any loose ball to limit St Mary's possession, as Towers pinned St Mary's into their own half. Evan Petit Demage (replacing an injured Madden),  Niall McGee and Lewis Curran then entered the fray to ensure by retaining possession Towers keep St Mary's scoreless in the final moments.

Just as the deluge stopped referee Stephen Dawson blew the final whistle to jubilant celebrations by the Towers players.

St Mary's players who threw everything at Towers were disconsulate and exhausted at full time, minus two key players Adam craven (holidays) and Joseph Colmey (injured) they could not have tried harder but unfortunately came up short this time.

The Paddy O'Brien trophy was presented to Round Towers captain Carl McGovern by Ciaran Flynn.
