Dunderry's Stephen Coogan is crowded out by Conor Cullen, Davy Reynolds and Colin McGrane Walterstown during the Meath IFC game at Pairc Tailteann

Dunderry 2-14 Walterstown 0-11

Pairc Tailteann was the venue for the clash of the black and whites on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Dunderry playing down towards the hospital end with the wind at their backs got off to a flying start in this round 1 game. Racing to a 1-4 to 0-0 lead. Adam Kelly doing damage inside with 1-2 from play on his Championship debut and Conor Farrell also scoring 2 from long range efforts.

Further scores from the lively Coogan (0-2), Luke Martyn and another beauty from the impressive Conor Farrell left the half time score Dunderry 1-8 Walterstown 0-4.

The second half began with Walterstown flying out of the traps and taking full advantage of the wind behind them scoring the opening 3 points of the half in quick succession. Adam Kelly kept the scoreboard ticking for Dunderry with a fisted point after a fine move down the stand side. Another surge came from Walterstown who got back within a point of Dunderry with 10 minutes left with some fine points from O’Connell brothers.

The introduction of experienced trio Marc Kane, Alan Watters and Liam Dempsey seemed to steady the Dunderry ship and a well taken goal from Coogan who rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net calmed the Dunderry nerves. Further points from Farrell who finished with 0-5 from play, Luke Martyn with an exquisite point off the outside of the right and Coogan with two monster frees into the wind put the gloss on the scoreboard and Dunderry ran out 7 point victors by a score of 2-14 to 0-11.

Excellent performances by some individuals, Farrell, Coogan, Kelly and the evergreen Davy McCormack keeping reigns in the full back line contributed to a fine team performance with definite room for improvement.

Next up in round 2 for Dunderry is Blackhall Gaels in a fortnights time.

Walterstown Report

Walterstown played Dunderry in the first round of the IFC in Pairc Tailteann on Sunday. The Blacks was playing in an unfamiliar kit of Green and White (Bective) due to a clash in colours.

Walterstown played into the strong wind in the first half and did not get off to a good start. Dunderry made maximum use of the wind and after 17 minutes had scored 1-5 while Walterstown had still failed to register a score. Barry O Connell opened the scoring for Walterstown and thanks to points from Brian O Connell, Colm Reilly and another from Barry they reached half time 0-4 to 1-8 behind, also thankful to John Davis who pulled off a fine save to prevent Dunderry running away with the game.

With only seven minutes to go Walterstown were only 2 points behind when Barry O Connell angled over a very difficult free. The score was now at 0-12 to 1-11 in favour of Dunderry. The teams traded points again with another O Connell long range effort. However Walterstown’s dreams of a comeback were dashed when Dunderry scored a well worked goal in the 26th minute.
