Longwood 1-10 Blackhall Gaels 2-10

Blackhall Gaels have finally got their league campaign up and running with a hard fought win away to Longwood on Sunday morning.

Blackhall started the game extremely quick playing into the clubhouse end in Longwood going into a 1-2 to 3 point lead after 15 mins. A penalty won by Dermot Carty 15 minutes into the game was converted by the returning Alan Nestor. Blackhall were able to edge further ahead of Longwood at Halftime thanks to a couple of Dermot Carty frees and a superb point from Tom Murphy. At half time Blackhall led Longwood 1-5 to 0-4.

Blackhall Playing up the hill in the second half got off to the perfect start with first half substitute Fergal Kiernan, on for the injured Dylan Cranley, scored a well worked moved into the back of the net. Blackhall had a 2-3 minute salvo of pressure but could not unfortunately add to their lead.
Longwood went on the initiative and scored 1-3 without reply to cut the deficit to the minimum. Longwood continued to pile on the pressure and only for a great save by goalkeeper Tommy Dalton Blackhall Gaels would have been trailing going into the last 15 mins of the game. This save sparked the Gaels back into life and would go on to outscore Longwood 5 points to 3 in the final quarter with some fining scoring from Alan Nestor and Dermot Carty and a super individual effort by midfielder Donnacha Tobin putting the final gloss on a great victory for the Gaels.

Longwood would finish the game very strong and throw everything at the Gaels in injury time to try and save a draw but Blackhall would withhold the onslaught to record their first win of the league campaign and build some important momentum for the ensuing Intermediate football Championship.

There were some fine performances for Blackhall Gaels throughout the game, Adam McHugh and Conor Delany had good solid games at corner back along with centre back, and returning county hurler, Shane Whitty. The ever present Donnacha Tobin marshalled Midfield while in the forwards there were good showings from John Kelly at wing forward and Alan Nestor at half forward. Sharpshooter Dermot Carty had another good day from the frees, and won plenty of dirty ball.
