Simonstown Gaels 2-12  Oldcastle 0-7

This game was played in Simonstown in bitterly cold and blustery conditions. The first half was tight with very few scores being converted. However the Gaels improved in the second climatising to the conditions and dispatching a total of 9 scores.

Simonstown began the game brightly with a point by Mark McCabe. Oldcastle responded quickly with a point on the 5th minute but the Gaels answered back swiftly with a goal and a point. The goal was well worked with Crouchy McCabe palming the ball down to the on rushing Ben Hoey. Hoey displayed trickery and composure to evade the advancing Oldcastle keeper. Hoey finished with aplomb and this made it a 4 point game after 10 minutes. This proved to be the Gaels purple patch in the first half as the players struggled withconditions. The Oldcastle men reacted well to the concession of the goal and halved the deficit before the midway point. A crucial part of the game came before half time when Simonstown registered two quickfire points through Padraig McKeever and Shane Barry. Score at half time was Simonstown 1-4 (7) Oldcastle 0-4 (4).

Padraig McKeever began the second half with a point from a free and looked in the mood from the onset. He scored an inspirational point on the 40th minute from distance. Brian McGrath also looked sharp and his powerful running from deep enabled the Gaels to begin many attacks. Oldcastle Report

Oldcastle 0-07, Simonstown 2-12

The Oldcastle team were even more depleted by injury for this latest Div. 1 encounter, but made the best of the situation and put up a spirited display with the aid of many of the younger squad members. Simonstown got off to a great start with an early goal, but Oldcastle kept in touch with points from Robbie Farrelly, Rory McHugh and Paddy Rahill. A free from Farrelly added another, but it was the home side who had that goal advantage at the break: Simonstown 1-04, Oldcastle 0-04.

The strength of the Simonstown team showed in the second half, and with the wind howling and sleet biting they proved just that bit stronger. Oldcastle’s scores came from a Robbie Farrelly free, Keith Connell and Terry Farrelly; recently returned from Canada and enjoying the similar weather conditions in Navan. A good team performance overall from a very young Oldcastle side sees them look forward to the next encounter against Ratoath in Millbrook.

Oldcastle: Jack Fox, Louis Colleran, Cian McPartland, Oran O’Reilly, Terry Farrelly (0-01), Ger Reidy, Conor Hetherton, Paddy Rahill (0-01), Keith Connell, Darren Hawdon, Robbie Farrelly (0-03), Steven Lawless, Kyle Kavanagh, Rory McHugh (0-01), Colin Hawdon.
