Gaeil Colmcille Ladies 6-13 St. Colmcille's 0-11
After heartbreak In last years Junior ‘D’ Final, Gaeil Colmcille were out to make amends this year when they faced St. Colmcille’s in the Masita Junior ‘C’ Final in Dunshaughlin on a blustery Sunday afternoon.
Gaeil Colmcille, playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half, got off to a quick start thanks to two points from half-forward Rachel Kumar. Orla O’Rorke added two more points from free kicks followed by Kumar’s third point of the match left the Kells girls 0-05 to 0-01 to the good after 10 minutes. Gaeil Colmcille goaled on 11 minutes thanks to strong work in the backs saw the ball finished to the net by O’Rorke pushed Kells clear by 10 points.
The 2nd third of the opening half saw both sides press the defences with no scores coming. Gaeil Colmcille got their second goal of the game on the 20th minute mark when “Player of the match” Ciara Brady, who top scored on the day with 1-04 found the back of the net. Gaeil Colmcille found the net for a third time, with arguably the goal of the game, corner forward Ella Reilly raced through on goal and her shot rifled to the top corner of the net. St. Colmcille’s finished the half strong and hit three unanswered points in a row to leave 11 points between the sides. There was to be one more crucial score before half time when Gaeil Colmcille midfielder Emma Connell’s long range effort nestled in the St. Colmcille’s net leaving Kells with a 4-06 to 0-04 lead at half-time.
After the break both sides trading scores with Kells points coming from Sam Bennett, Aisling Reilly and Brady. Everything seemed to be going the Kells girls way with Reilly tagging on a point and Kumar getting her fourth of the game. On 54 minutes Gaeil Colmcille found the net for the fifth time when Caoilinn Connell struck. St. Colmcille’s got a late flurry of points before centre half forward Bennett finished off the scoring when she scored the sixth goal and the final score of the match. Captain AnnMarie Keyes and Vice-Captain Kumar collected the trophy and the celebrations were in full flow.
