JFC: Thriller ends all square in Walterstown

August 16, 2018

Charlie McGarry Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 1-12  Dunshaughlin 1-12

Chríchnaigh na foirne ar chomhscór sa deireadh. Bhí tosach láidir ag foireann Bhulf Ton agus bhíodar thí chúilíní chun tosaigh taréis aon nóiméad déag. Ag leath am bhí na foirne ar chomhscór agus cé go raibh an láimh in uachtar ag Dún Seachlainn go luath sa dara leath is beag nach raibh bua iontach ag Bhulf Tón.

The sides served up a thriller in a very entertaining game played in ideal conditions. Tones trailed by a goal as the final whistle beckoned, having conceded a penalty after 50 minutes which was duly converted. A long ball from Alan Fox was contested on the edge of the Dunshaughlin square by both Davy O Neill and Charlie Mc Garry, with Mc Garry getting the final touch to draw the teams level in the 56th minute. Minutes later Fox nudged Tony Kearney's men in front with a well taken point. Dunshaughlin replied immediately and then hit a wide. Alan Fox pointed to nudge Tones in front again and Tones seemed set for victory. However Dunshaughlin levelled matters again in the 4th minute of injury time and supporters expected the final whistle on the restart. Two further minutes of added time were played with every possession vital. Tones almost gained victory when Cillian O Brien had a snap shot under pressure with the last kick of the game but was unlucky to see his shot drift narrowly wide.

Tones had opened brightly and led 0 05 to 0 01 after 11 minutes. Thomas Blaney was hot to handle and had three points on the board (one free) in the opening minutes. Aonghus Mc Loughlin had accounted for the other Tones' scores. However, Dunshaughlin gradually got a foothold in the game and Tones wouldn't score again until the 27th minute by which time the teams were level, Alan Fox's free restoring the Tones lead. This didn't however halt Dunshaughlin's momentum and they added two further points to take the lead for the first time in the 29th minute. An Alan Fox free left the teams level at 0  07 at half time.

The sides traded points after the interval and were level on 10 points each after 41 minutes, Thomas Blaney (2, 1 free) and Davy Coleman being the Tones scorers. Dunshaughlin registered three costly wides from good positions before the converted penalty gave them a significant lead heading into the closing stages. Shortly afterwards they lost a player to a second yellow card following a high tackle on Oisín Mac Ghinneartaí. It was "nip and tuck" to the final whistle following Mc Garry's goal, with Alan Fox to the fore. There was a youthful look to the Tones team with no fewer than five starting players having received their leaving cert results that morning!
