Walterstown's Joey Coogan

Walterstown 1-13   Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-7

Walterstown played Donaghmore/Ashbourne in Ashbourne on Wednesday evening, badly needing a win to avoid the relegation zone. This was an entertaining game played in ideal conditions. In the first half the teams traded points with Ashbourne leading at halftime on a scoreline of 0-4 to 0-3. Walterstown however were now down to 14 men having lost half forward Michael Clarke to a red card after 20 minutes. In the second half Walterstown seemed to up their game. Mark Foy had an excellent game at midfield. Christopher Farrelly distributed accurately from the centre field position. Walterstown's young full forward Barry O Connell who has been out with injury for a year was really on song. His contribution of 9 points (6 from play) was a fantastic display of shooting. In the second half Walterstown got 3 points ahead thanks to nice scores from Mark Foy, Andrew Moran and Barry O Connell. Ashbourne however struck back with a well worked goal to level the match after 20 minutes. Keeper Darragh Keegan whose kick outs were excellent could do little to stop the goal. Walterstown's defence did not falter with Cathal Hennelly, Cathal McGuiness and Dan Halligan working hardest. For the last quarter they kept Don Ashbourne to just 1 more point. Mark Foy and Christopher Farrelly gained the upper hand at mid field. Barry O Connell continued to torture the Ashbourne defence scoring the Blacks last 4 points as well as supplying the pass for Stephen Davis's well finished goal. When referee Pat Coyle blew for full time, the score was 1-13 to 1-7 in favour of Walterstown.
