AFL Div 4: All square in Donore

July 11, 2018

Kilmainhamwood's Steven Kiernan

St Marys 2-9  Kilmainhamwood 1-12

In a strange game in Donore, Kilmainhamwood and St Marys shared the spoils. The first half resembled something closer to a game of golf rather than a football game as both teams slowly moved the ball across the grass without anything close to a sprint being exerted. The Wood looked comfortably in control maintaining most of the possession as St Marys sat back. But the Wood were only able to gain a 3 point lead as the Marys defended deep. The home team then got a goal as a speculative ball landed in the goals after it was punched in. This left the Marys on top. Two scores each for both sides meant the hosts were two points to the good at half time.

The second half was of much higher quality. The team in white started off brightly as they got their opening point through Paul Carolan. A well worked  team move led to Harry Corbally blasting the ball home from close range. The Marys fought back with two points to equal things up, before two points from Micheal Shankey and David Russell left the Kilmainhamwood two points up with 15 minutes to go. Soon after St Marys had a good move which ended up with the Wood deflecting the ball into their own net. Both sides traded scores for the rest of the game as David Russell, Paul Carolan, Micheal Shankey, Harry Corbally and substitute Stephen Kiernan all pointed. In the end the sides ended up level, in what was an evenly contested game.
