BFL Div 1: 'Tones' edge a close one

July 11, 2018

Caolan Ward Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 0-14  Gaeil Colmcille 0-13

A minutes silence preceded this game in memory of local man Martin Ginnelly  who was fatally injured in a traffic accident at the weekend, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Home side Bhulf Tón were in dire need of the points to avoid relegation and made a good start to this game which was keenly contested throughout. Although Tones led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time and scored the first two points of the second half Gaeil Colmcille roared back into contention to score 0-4 without reply by the 31st minute. Caolan Ward restored parity with a long range point after which Rossa Mc Donnell nudged Tones back in front. The visitors scored four in a row to lead by 0-13 to 0-10 by the 50th minute and seemed set for victory. One of these scores was a '45 following a wonderful save from Tones keeper Seán Power who made a reflex save from following a deflected shot which seemed a certain score. Caolan Ward narrowed the gap to two with a free but the home side couldn't add to their tally before the end of normal time.  There was an extended period of injury time due to head injury sustained by a Kells player and this gave the team in purple and gold time to mount a memorable come back. A converted '45 from Caolán Ward narrowed the gap to one point following a Patrick Caffrey goal effort and Oisín Corrigan converted a free following a foul on Davy O Neill to draw the teams level after 65 minutes. Possession from the next kick out would be vital. After a scramble for possession in mid field Tones centre back Killian O Brien was brought down as he drove forward and Caolán Ward drew loud applause from the home crowd as he converted the 46 metre free to earn victory for the home side in what was the last action of this very exciting game.
