John Farrell gains possession against Gaeil Colmcille in the Meath IHC

Rathmolyon locked horns in this widely anticipated IHC opening round meeting with Gael Colmcille in Kildalkey.

Gaeil Colmcille 2-15 Rathmolyon 1-15.

When these two teams met in the championship last year it was Rathmolyon who emerged victorious.

The weather held up but there was a strong breeze which favoured Gaeil Colmcille in the first half. Both teams took a while to settle with the score being Rathmolyon 0-01 to no score after 10 minutes.

When both teams finally settled, there was some good skill on show with Gaeil Colmcille taking the lead. Rathmolyon's John Farrell scored a speculative goal when attempting a point, the wind held it up and floated it in over the goalkeepers head. The teams went in at the break level Rathmolyon 1-06 Gaeil Colmcille 0-09.

The match was well poised but the Kellsmen hit the ground running with two goals in the third quarter.

With ten minutes to go Gaeil Colmcille led 2-14 to 1-11. However Rathmolyon rallied, led impressively by Mark Lynch who scored some fantastic long range points.

Rathmolyon continued to eat  into the lead and Daniel Whelan had a fantastic chance to score a second goal but the Kells goalkeeper brought off a fantastic save and the town side held on to win by three.
