FL Div 1: Gaeils go top

May 20, 2018

Brian Hanlon Gaeil Colmcille

Skryne 2-11 Gaeil Colmcille 3-14

Gaeil Colmcille made the trip up the M3 all worthwhile when they came away with the two precious points to see them go top of the A League Division One alongside Skryne.

Gaeil Colmcille came up against a weakened Skryne who were missing some big names from their usual starting fifteen and they got off to the best possible start when Seamus Mattimoe got in behind the Skryne backs and as he seemed to lose control of the football he somehow managed to kick the ball into the back of the net after 3 minutes.

The home side responded with three points in a row with some fine shooting from the Skryne men. Points from Brian Hanlon and Oisin Reilly saw Kells go one point ahead and on 10 minutes Hanlon broke free and rifled a left footed shot to the top left corner of the Skryne leaving Kells ahead by 4 points. Two minutes later and Gaeil Colmcille's luck got better when Fionn Ferguson went to chip the ball over the bar but the ball nestled in the back of the net to give Kells a comfortable lead midway through the half. Hanlon tagged on two extra points along with a solo score from Martin Barrett seen Kells go in 3-05 to 0-06 up at Half-Time.

Gaeil Colmcille got off to what looked to be the perfect start when Mattimoe pointed over on 33 minutes only for Skryne to get back into the game straight away with a goal on 34 minutes. With both teams sharing the next four points with Hanlon pointing over a free off the ground from 50 yards out.

Skryne got back to within a goal when on 41 minutes the found the back of the net again and it seemed game on. As Skryne put the pressure Mattimoe pointed to steady the ship and when substitute Keith Reilly pointed on 46 minutes it put Kells 5 points clear going into the last quarter of the game. Kells held out the remainder of the game and thanks to points from Hanlon (2), Mattimoe and Reilly saw Kells win out by six points. Next up for Kells will be welcoming Donaghmore/Ashbourne, who lie in third position to Grangegodden next Saturday.

Skryne Report

Winning streak halted by Gaeil Colmcille

Skryne 2-11 Gaeil Colmcille 3-14

Skryne's unbeaten run in the A League came to an end today in Skryne when visitors Gaeil Colmcille took all two points to join Skryne at the top of the Division 1 table.

Three goals from Gaeil Colmcille inside the opening quarter of an hour were the winning of the game. Gaeil Colmcille's opening score was a goal inside the first three minutes of the game when a Colmcille's attacker finished to the net after a mazy run into the Skryne penalty area. Skryne were quickly back on terms with Conor O'Brien shooting two points from play and Ciarán Lenehan adding another. Kells snuck ahead once more with their second score of the game, but this was cancelled out by another fine point from Lenny. The next ten minutes saw a Gaeil Colmcille's scoring spree as they hit 2-03 without a reply from Skryne. The first of the goals came when a Kells forward broke free from the attention of the Skryne defence on the right hand side and bared down on the Skryne goal before firing a bullet of a shot past Ian Gillette. The second was a bit of a mystery as a dangerous high ball into the square was fisted away by Ian Gillette. A Kellsman picked up the clearance and scuffed a pointed effort towards the goal. The ball initially appeared to go over the bar, but it had dipped at the last second and slipped in under the crossbar. Some confusion ensued as  a point was initially recorded on the scoreboard, but this was rectified following consultation with the referee. Skryne added two pointed frees through Paddy O'Rourke late in the half with Kells completing the first half scoring with another from play to see them lead at half-time on a scoreline of Skryne 0-06, Gaeil Colmcille 3-05.

Kells shot the first point of the second half to extend their lead. However, a good Skryne move finished with Ian Davis palming the ball into the Kells goal. The sides swapped two points each before Skryne hit another goal with Paddy O'Rourke getting on the end of another good Skryne move to fire to the net. The deficit was down to three points but Kells weren't deterred and scored six more points to Skryne's three to run out winners on a score line of Skryne 2-11, Gaeil Colmcille 3-14.

Skryne will be hoping to bounce back quickly and will get an opportunity next Saturday evening when they face Wolfe Tones in Round 9 in Kilberry.
