April 17, 2018

David O'Neill Wolfe Tones

Bhulf Tón 3-12 Ó Mathúna 0-7

Bhí tús maith ag Bhulf Tón i gcoinne na gaoithe sa chluiche seo le dhá chúil tareis ceithre nóimead agus sé nóiméad  agus bhí said ro láidir ina dhiaidh sin do Mathúna an Uaimh.

Playing against a stiff breeze in sunny conditions Tones had the dream start netting two goals inside six minutes. The first came from veteran Davy O Neill. The Limerick native was first to react when a Caolán Ward free in the fourth minute came off the upright and he palmed the ball to the net. The same player provided the assist for Gary Mc Fadden to goal two minutes later following good play from Mark Coleman. Tones added three points to their tally before the interval courtesy of Caolán Ward (2, one free) and Eanna O Kelly Lynch while O Mathúna managed four points (3 frees) before the interval to leave the Oristown -Kilberry side 2  03 to 0 04 ahead at half time.

Wind assisted Tones started the second period well and had added four points, a pointed free from Caolán Ward, 2 points from David Coleman added to a point from half time substitute Alan Fox to lead by 2  07 to 0 04 before O Mathúna got their first point of the second half after 45 minutes. Tones were home and hosed by this stage and put a gloss on the victory when Davy O Neill got in for his second goal of the evening. Using all his height he doubled on a Cillian O Brien point attempt which was partially blocked to flick the ball over the advancing Navan side's keeper. Three further points from Caolán Ward and a point each from Mark Coleman and Alan Fox completed the Tones' scoring.

While O Mathúna enjoyed good possession for periods of the game they struggled to make it count on the score board thanks to excellent defending form Oisín Mac Ghinneartaí, Ciarán " Ronnie" Mc Loughlin and Alan Mc Keever, the latter two using all their experience to be in the right place at the right time throughout. Davy Coleman carried the ball forward at every opportunity and was well rewarded with two points. Brughach O Fionnagáin marshalled the defence well and was busy throughout. Mid fielders Mark Coleman and Alan Callaghan had fine games with Callaghan particularly effective on the kick outs. Caolán Ward covered acres of ground and was very accurate from placed balls while Éanna O Kelly Lynch linked the play well. Thomas Blaney tied the opposing defense in knots with his dazzling footwork while Davy O Neill made the most of the possession that came his way. Alan Fox who came on at half time belied the playing years under his belt and his clever touches both in defence and attack drew well-earned applause from the Tones supporters.
