FL Div 3: Second win for Ultans

February 26, 2018

St. Ultans Mark Allen

St Ultans 3-9 Dunsany 1-8

St Ultans recorded their second victory in the league but despite leading for most of the match it looked unlikely they would get a win. As they entered the last five minutes, they were two points down and playing against a strong breeze.

Ultans aided by a strong wind in the first half got the first scores of the game. A free from Ronan Breslin and point from Cian Rennicks. Dunsany struck back with a well taken penalty after an Ultans defender fouled the ball in small square. Ultans took advantage of the strong breeze to score five of the next six scores with a brace from Mark Allan, Ronan Breslin with a 45, and a point each from Conor Smyth and Darren Kavanagh. This left a gap of three points at half time but playing into a strong wind.

Mark Allen opened the scoring in the 2nd half but this was quickly cancelled out by a Dunsany free. Gearoid Rennicks raised Ultans last white flag on the day early in the second half. Dunsany then took advantage of conditions and kicked six scores in row from play many from distance. This left Dunsany two up with five minutes to go and Ultans struggling to kick points into the wind and against a tight marking defence. Sean Herward up from from full back drove a shot low and hard after a driving run but this was well saved by the Dunsany goalkeeper, he found himself in the same position shortly after and this time the ball hit the net. Eoin Kavanagh finished cooly to the net after being slipped through by Conor Smyth to leave the gap at 4 but Ultans weren't done yet and Mark Allen hit the net for the last score of the game.

Keith Hennessy made his first team debut with an excellent performance in goals. Saving Ultans bacon on several occasions. Next up for Ultans is a derby match with neighbours Kilmainham.
