Ballintubber claim IFC title

October 04, 2007
Kevin McGuinness was the toast of Ballintubber after his last-gasp point handed the red and whites a dramatic 0-9 to 0-8 victory over Kiltimagh in last Sunday's Mayo IFC decider at McHale Park. Moments earlier, it looked as though McGuinness would be the villian of the piece when he was caught in possession and Kiltimagh worked the ball downfield for Sean Malee to score the equalizing point from a free. But there was still enough time for McGuinness to redeem himself and send Ballintubber back into the senior ranks. While the final ended in a welter of excitement, it was a disappointing affair overall with only three points coming from play. Kiltimagh suffered a blow before the throw-in when centre back Tomas Morley was unable to line out, but there was nothing to separate the teams for the most part, with Ballintubber holding a slender 0-5 to 0-4 lead at the break. Six frees from county star Alan Dillon looked to have given Ballintubber a vital edge but Kiltimagh stayed in touch and appeared to have earned a replay until McGuinness produced his late, late winner.
