Beirne concerned for Mayo future

June 28, 2007
Mayo minor football selector Kevin Beirne believes that Mayo football is entering a state of emergency and fears for future success in the county after his side were outclassed by Roscommon in last Saturday provincial semi-final. The disappointing defeat increased Mayo's barren spell without silverware in the grade to seven years and Beirne believes that such a record is simply not good enough for a county with such a proud footballing tradition. ''Minor footballers are the future of Mayo senior football and lets be honest it's a serious situation now, to have gone seven years without the delivery of a provincial title,'' Beirne said. ''It is not the be all and end all but Mayo is a proud county with a proud minor pedigree and tradition and it is not good enough to be without a Connaught title for so long,'' he added.
