Former Dublin midfielder Jack Sheedy says his native county will need to perform to a higher level if they are to overcome Mayo on Saturday week.

The Lucan Sarsfields clubman felt the All-Ireland champions were "lucky" to avoid a shock defeat last Sunday at Croke Park and was impressed with the quality of their opponents' defending over the hour.

"Dublin have to improve their performance. The return they got won't be good enough the next day. They were lucky it was good enough the last day," the former Longford manager is quoted saying in today's Irish Daily Star.

"Dublin got opportunities and got that bit of luck which you need, but they have to be a little bit more direct to break down Mayo. Defensively, Mayo were very, very strong, but there are gaps there.

"Dublin need to see them gaps a little bit quicker and exploit them as Mayo are very good at closing them down.

"Mayo will have the bit between their teeth now and are going to be hard beat. It will be maybe even more difficult for Dublin this time. Dublin really have to perform.

"I said it before, that Dublin have to perform to a high level to beat Mayo."
