Stephen Rochford expects to talk to Mayo officials soon about becoming the county's new football manager.

Corofin's surprise defeat to Castlebar Mitchels in yesterday's Connacht club SFC final is expected to fast-track the Crossmolina native's appointment to the Mayo post.

"I've spoken with the chairman maybe 10 days to a fortnight ago about the calendar of events we're looking at. I think we might be in a position to move things along this week," the departing Corofin manager told RTE.

"I certainly would [like to be manager]. There's a huge commitment, but the carrot of managing your own county is a huge thing.

"If I'm lucky enough or fortuitous enough to be the person that's going to be managing Mayo in the near future I'll be absolutely delighted and really looking forward to it if it materialises.

"Maybe within the next 24 or 48 hours I might get some communication form the county board around what their future plans are."
