Determined Kilcoyne on comeback trail

Mayo's Aidan Kilcoyne

Former Mayo footballer Aidan Kilcoyne is hoping to be back playing football sooner rather than later.

Kilcoyne damaged his knee in a freakish incident last October 12 months when lining out for his club Knockmore against Ballintubber.

After having the team photo taken before the game, Kilcoyne leapt off the bench and sprinted away only for his knee to give way underneath and so began 18 months of rehabilitation.

The former Mayo star has still some way to go before he will be lining out with his club yet, but he admitted to the Mayo News that he hasn't given up hope yet.

"I'm improving all the time, but one day you take a step forward and the next could be two steps back. That's just the way it is," said Kilcoyne.

"Last weekend was one year since the ACL operation. That went well but I got a bit of an infection in the wound that set me back six or seven weeks. It also mean that the screws that were holding the ACL graft in place had to be removed, which was a good thing.

"Stability wise the knee is very good. The surgeons did a good job. Maybe too good, because I'm getting it hard to bend. Strength wise it's very good as well but getting movement in it is difficult."

He added: There's a long way to go, and I'm not 100% that I'm going to get back playing football. But I'm more confident that I was, and so is the surgeon. I turn 30 in August, and I'd love to be able to tog out in August. I just don't know how feasible that is."
